MacBook Won’t Turn On? Simple Checks, Common Causes and Board-Level Repair

A MacBook that won’t turn on isn’t always a dead MacBook. Sometimes it is the charger, a flat battery or a stuck startup. Sometimes it is a fault on the main board that can be repaired at component level, without the cost of a whole new board. Start with the simple checks below.

Simple checks first

These follow Apple’s own guide for a Mac that doesn’t turn on:

  1. Check the power. Make sure the charger and cable are undamaged and firmly plugged in to a socket that works. Try another compatible charger or cable if you have one, and leave it charging for a while before you try again.
  2. Hold the power button for about 10 seconds. On a MacBook with Touch ID, hold Touch ID. Then press it again normally to start up.
  3. Unplug everything else, such as hubs, drives and phones, and try step 2 again.
  4. Look closely at the screen. A very dim picture, a flashing question mark or a crossed-out circle means the Mac is turning on but not starting up properly. That is a different fault, often software or storage, not power.
  5. Older Intel MacBooks only: Apple suggests resetting the SMC. Apple says MacBooks with Apple silicon (M1 and later) don’t need this.

Common reasons a MacBook won’t turn on

  • Charger, cable or charging port. A worn USB-C or MagSafe cable, or a damaged port, can stop the MacBook charging at all.
  • A battery that has completely run down or failed. A swollen battery can also lift the trackpad or the case. If you see that, stop using it.
  • Liquid. Even a small spill weeks ago can corrode the board and stop it powering on. See spilled liquid on a laptop: what to do.
  • A fault on the main board, such as a failed power component or a short circuit. This is the most common cause when the simple checks don’t help.
  • The screen, not the MacBook. Sometimes it is running but the display or its cable has failed. Plugging in an external monitor shows this. See MacBook screen repair.

Board-level repair, not just board swaps

Many shops can only offer a replacement main board, which on a MacBook often costs close to the value of the laptop. ITS4UK has a background in electronics and board-level repair, so a faulty board can often be diagnosed and repaired by replacing the failed component instead. When it isn’t worth repairing, you’ll be told that honestly.

What about your files?

On MacBooks with Apple silicon and on most recent Intel models, the storage is built into the main board and encrypted. That means the files usually can’t be taken out on a separate drive. Getting the board working again is often the only way back to them, which is another reason not to give up on a MacBook that won’t start. See data recovery.

Prices and how it works

  • Diagnosis is free, and you get a fixed price before any repair work starts.
  • Deeper testing is £20 (£30 for business or trade), and micro-level chip testing is £49. These are charged even if the fault can’t be fixed, because the testing has been done.
  • Repairs come with a 90-day guarantee on parts and labour.

Questions

My MacBook makes no sound and shows no light. Is it dead?

Not necessarily. Try the checks above with a charger you know works. If nothing changes, the fault is usually in the charging circuit or on the main board, and that can often be repaired.

Is it worth repairing an older MacBook?

It depends on the model and the fault. After diagnosis you’ll get a price and an honest view of whether the repair makes sense compared with replacing it.

Can you get my files off if it can’t be fixed?

It depends on the model. Older MacBooks with a removable drive are straightforward. On newer ones the board usually needs to work, so the options will be explained after diagnosis.
